I thought I’d write a post because it seems a lot of people are confusing feminism with the man-hating death to every man crazy over the top people.
I’m not going to crap on about the patriarchy – we KNOW that we live in a male dominated society, you only have to look at the politicians, company managers, sports that get the funding and focus of most of the news time.
I do think that in reference to politicians and management positions especially, in the next 10 years we’ll see a massive change in this because the women who are old enough (when I say old enough I mean experience and qualifications wise) to fill these positions now are few and far between, because equality wasn’t a big focus when they were growing up and going through high school/university. So I do believe that this will change.
The reasons I am a feminist and why I think you are too are much closer to home, and then also much, much bigger than you or me.
I am a feminist because I think every woman is entitled to walk down the street and not feel afraid.
And directly relating to this, I am a feminist because I think no man should be feared because of his gender – which is where it stands now.
Because of a few (and really, it is a few when you look at the massive numbers of men there are in the world) absolute fucking disgusting pigs, most men are feared. Because they could be a rapist.
The reason this fear is so big is because we have a society of victim blaming – women are worried that if they are raped, if they don’t scream loud enough, don’t fight hard enough, they won’t be believed.
And 100% men can and do get raped too. Which is another reason we need feminism. Men need feminism so that they can feel comfortable coming forward, pressing charges against a woman who raped them. So men are not told that if they were a real man they would have enjoyed it. It is about equality on both sides.
We need feminism so that my daughter doesn’t think twice about any job she wants. She just puts her mind to it and does it.
We need feminism so any father has equal entitlements to parental leave and the opportunity to stay home and raise the children if that’s what works for the family.
On a much bigger scale – we need feminism because a world where a newborn baby dies from falling off the lap of it’s mother who is being gang raped, is not okay. Gang rapes are not okay. Rape is not okay. Child brides are not okay. Illegal abortions are not okay. Sex trafficking is not okay. Women dying in childbirth because there are no adequate facilities is not okay. I know that everyone out there knows, this is not okay.
We need feminism because there are people out there – and I’ve actually seen the quote on my facebook page from a friend of a friend and they were laughing about it that “feminism is basically terrorism”. The fact that people are so afraid of equality that they would liken it to terrorism is exactly why we need it.
It isn’t about being better than. It is about everyone having the same opportunities.
It is about my son being able to have his ears pierced and not be called a girl.It is about a girl being able to cut her hair short and not be called a boy.
It is about boys not being told to man up and actually talk about their emotions – having adequate access and support to help lines and knowing that emotions are good things.
It is about girls not being told they can’t be mechanics, or that they’re a distraction in the armed forces or they ruin the brotherhood.
It is about stopping the media portraying these unrealistic expectations of each gender that a minimal amount of people live up to – and yes I say both genders because men are just as biased in advertising as women. And I know this because my little 5 year old looked at a man on tv and said “How do I get muscles on my chest and tummy like that?!”
There are people who would have you believe (and people who know doubt do believe) that feminism is about the downfall of men and the time for women to take over – that men have been in charge for thousands of years so we’ll put them back and women will take over the world – hell there are people who’ve stated men are no longer a necessary part of the human race because we’ve genetically created an embryo using the DNA from 2 women. I like to call these people the equivalent of the Westborough Baptist Church. They’re crazy. They’re not a true representation of what feminism is – equality. For everyone.
