Yesterday we went to orientation for primary school for Dexter.
Firstly – when the shit did my baby boy get to be so big?
When the hell did he grow enough to go to school?!
I was terrified.
A whole bunch of people that might judge me and we have nothing in common and what do I wear and the anxiety of it all and when did he get so old holy shit.
It was mostly boring.
We had a bus person tell us about safety on buses. We had a healthy food person tell us about making healthy lunches.
We had the office lady tell us about if we don’t pay our fees we’ll jeopardise our children’s futures.
We had cake.
Then we were aloud to wander the school.
The kids naturally gravitated toward the playground.
I stood there watching my big little boy and another mother stood next to me. She introduced herself and we were catching.
The usual stuff really.
and she said
“Yeah… I’m one of those older mums… He keeps me young though! I feel about 16 when I’m with him.”
The way she said it. The tone, the body language. I thought:
HOLY SHIT THIS WOMAN IS JUST AS ANXIOUS AND WORRIED ABOUT BEING JUDGED AS ME!!
We’re all the fucking same!!
So here’s to the mamas and papas sending their babies off to school.
We’re all the fucking same.
